Mount Lofty is the highest point of the Mount Lofty Ranges and is located towards the east of the state. It is about 45 minutes drive from Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway and the Botanic Garden is located just below the summit with trekking access to the top.
With the cool temperature and the fresh air from the ranges, it is a popular location for people wanting to take a break in a park. I have been to the Mount Lofty summit a couple of times now, but have never really been to the Botanic Garden until now.
It has two small lakes, and a great view of the Carminow house. The Carminow was once called “The Pinnacles”, home to Sir Thomas Elder who died in 6 March 1987. The house was badly damaged during the Ash Wednesday fire in 1983 but survived none-the-less. Access to the house is restricted, I am not sure if this is now a private property (update: I have been told this is now a restaurant), but I would love to be able to go in there one day to take photos of this magnificent building standing on top of the mountain.
